Profusion CEO Natalie Cramp was recently interviewed by Harper’s Bazaar about life as a data expert and the power that information can have to change society. In a wide-ranging conversation, Natalie covered what surprises people most about the data sector, the major changes it’s facing at the moment and where she hopes Profusion will be in 10 years.

Natalie says that what surprises people the most about data is its sheer variety of applications. “We can predict absence rates… improve the efficiency of market research into washing machines and even work out the molecular stability of ingredients to support a company’s production line,” she responded, “It is so varied.”

That huge variety of applications is what’s causing the industry to expand so quickly, says Natalie. “The major shift is the growing desire among companies to have an in-house data team,” she said, “There has been a huge increase in demand for data scientists and engineers, and a lack of skilled people to fill that gap.”

In 10 years, Natalie hopes Profusion’s Data Academy will not only help to fill that gap but make sure it’s filled by women and other underrepresented groups in the sector. “I also hope that within a decade, our data academy will have had a big impact on bringing more women and ethnic minorities into data as a profession, and that we can help other companies to do more of this too.”
